“It's hard to address something if you can't actually name what it is,” says Moya Bailey, who coined a term that enables people to discuss a specific combination of racism and sexism: misogynoir.

EXTRA MATERIALS:

  • Moya’s piece about Meghan Markle and misogynoir is one of the only worthwhile pieces of recent royal commentary IMO.

  • Alexandra Wilson: “I’m not a defendant. I am a barrister.”

  • Diane Abbott: “I fought racism and misogyny to become an MP. The fight is getting harder.”

  • “Flexner was right about historically Black medical schools’ and Black physicians’ key roles in American communities’ health. A century later, funding remains a struggle for historically Black institutions and for increasing numbers of US medical students”.

  • As of this year, the Flexner Award has been renamed.

  • “Most interracial commercials on TV are produced to provide white Americans with a sense of comfort that in the face of changing power structures and demographics they will still dominate the racial pecking order.”

Other portmanteau-related Allusionist episodes are Brunchtime and Podcast Podcast.
